How to find a stud in the ceiling and walls? You may have such a question for various reasons, for example, you need to install additional shelves on the wall or attach the plant hanger to the ceiling. Each such interior detail is attached to studs in the walls or joists in the ceiling.

The easiest way to find out where studs are located in the ceiling and walls is to use the stud finder. If you do not have this device, you can detect the location of the studs by ear or using a magnet. You can also find out where the studs are located by the sockets and switches.

What you Need to Know about Studs Location

There are three main ways to how to find a stud in the ceiling and walls, and which one you choose depends on the tools you have. To determine the location of the studs, you also need to know that in most cases they are 16 inches or 24 inches apart.

In the walls, studs are always vertical, but when you look for joists in the ceiling, you don’t always exactly know how they are laid, from north to south or from west to east. If you have the opportunity to go up to the attic, then in most houses you can see exactly how the joists are located there.

This information will greatly simplify your job of determining the location of joists. Already installed sockets, switches, furniture and decor elements nailed to the wall will also help you. All of them are attached to studs, which means they are located directly next to them.

How to Find a Stud in the Ceiling and Walls with Stud Finder

It should come as no surprise to you that the easiest way to find out where studs and joists are located is to use the dedicated hardware. The stud finder is very easy to use and will be able to pinpoint exactly where each stud starts and ends.

    Required Tools:

    1. Stud Finder
    2. Measure Tape
    3. Electrical Tape or Pencil
    4. Leader

To find where the studs are located, you need to turn on the stud finder and slowly slide it along the wall or ceiling. Stud finders come in a variety of styles and reflect the presence of studs behind the wall in different ways.

On the stud finder, a special indicator light may come on to indicate that you have found the location of the stud. In other models, a special mark will appear on the wall pointing to the stud.

When you find a stud you need to mark the wall, you can use a pencil for this. If you’re worried about ruining the look of the wall, you can use a piece of duct tape.

Since we know that the distance between studs is usually 16 inches, then to check it is necessary to take a measuring tape, and from the center of the found stud put a mark 16 inches to the right or left. After that, you need to check for the presence of the stud at the new point using the stud finder.

If there is a stud there, then you are doing everything correctly and can move further along the wall if you need to mark the entire wall or ceiling. If at the new point the indicator does not show the presence of stud, then this may mean that in your house the studs are located at a distance of 24 inches. Recheck the originally found stud and check it out.

It is best to start your search for studs from the corner of a wall or the location of outlets, switches, and other things attached to the studs. It is also worth knowing that stud finder can point not only to studs but also to water pipes and wiring, so carefully check each mark to make sure it is a stud.

When it comes to the ceiling, you’ll need a ladder to search. Also, if you are not sure in which direction the joists are stacked, then this should be checked initially. It is very easy to understand if the stud finder shows a joist along with the entire distance between the two marks. In this case, you are walking along one joist and you need to set the marks perpendicularly.

    Find Joists Using a Magnet

How to find a stud in the ceiling and walls when you don’t have a stud finder? This question is very popular because people rarely plan all the details when it is necessary to hang a shelf or a lamp.

For this method of identifying joists and studs, you need a magnet and a flashlight. Drywall mounted to walls and ceilings is attached to studs with metal bolts that can be easily found with a magnet.

    Required Tools:

    1. Magnet
    2. Flashlight
    3. Measure Tape
    4. Electrical Tape or Pencil
    5. Leader

As with the stud finder, you need to find the first stud. This is easiest to do in the corner of a wall or near outlets or switches. Measure 16 inches to the side and use a magnet to locate the metal bolts.

If everything worked out and the magnet stuck to the wall, then you have correctly identified the location of the stud. It is also worth noting that in the places where the fastening bolts are installed, there are small hollows.

From such depressions, you can also determine the location of studs and joists, it is especially convenient to do this on the ceiling. Create a twilight in the room, and hold the flashlight to the ceiling so that it illuminates the surface along with the ceiling. At the bolt attachment points, you will notice a slight shadow due to the hollows.

Mark these points with a pencil or pieces of duct tape. To make sure that the joists are positioned correctly, bring a magnet to these marks, if you did everything correctly, it will stick.

It is not very convenient to carry out these measurements on the ceiling since you constantly need to rearrange the leader. We recommend that you do this with the help of another person to help you.

    Find Studs without Additional Tools

If you don’t have a stud finder or a magnet on hand, this is not a problem, and if you wish, you can still find studs in the ceiling and walls. The next trick is often used by builders during repairs and for it, you will need a nail and a hammer.

    Required Tools:

    1. Measure Tape
    2. Leader
    3. Electrical Tape or Pencil
    4. Nail and Hammer

So how to find a stud in the ceiling and walls without special tools? For example, let’s take the studs search on the wall because it is identical to the joists search. You will need to tap your hand along the wall. It is unlikely that you will hear where exactly is emptiness and where is a stud, but you can feel it.

In the places where the studs are located, you will feel more resistance to tapping. Mark these points with tape or pencil. Then use a measuring tape to measure the distance between the locations of the proposed studs. If they are 16 or 24 inches, then most likely you did everything right.

To confirm your measurements, take a nail and gently drive it in the marked spots. It is recommended to do this in hardly visible places, near the baseboard or behind furniture. If the nail is firmly in the wood, then you have correctly located the studs.

It is also worth noting that hammering in a nail is smooth, without sharp blows. You can mistake stud for a pipe and damage it. For the same reason, it is not recommended to use bolts for this. The nail is much thinner and when it touches the pipe, it will simply go to the side without damaging it. If holes remain after the nail, you can easily fill them up with putty or silicone.
